Phooey! Too Windy for Plant Booth at School Carnival

Our Kids Garden Club had big plans to have a plant sale at our school carnival this afternoon. We had a white pop-up tent ready to go, and a new fold-up table. We were going to sell a bunch of perennials that we had potted up, and some kits of fun little seed-starting and crafts projects that kids could take home and do over the weekend. Proceeds were going to pay for the plants, seeds and equipment we need for our garden this summer.

But with wind gusts of more than 40 mph, we knew that tent would sail away to Timbuktu, and all our stuff with it. But they didn't have room for us inside the school. So we were stumped. We had to cancel the booth.

That's the good thing about a gardening club, though: it's a great problem-solving exercise. We'll sell those perennials some other way, and all our preparations won't go for naught. The "seeds" that we planted, getting ready for this sale, will sprout another way. In the garden, you're never stumped for long! If you can't grow in one direction, you just grow in another!

Bachelor's Buttons Are Speediest Seeds

Bachelor's Buttons are ready to be transplanted into 3" pots temporarily, for another 2 weeks under lights, and then to find their permanent home in the ground right after Mother's Day. What an easy, speedy seed!

If you're looking for a no-brainer seed to start with a kid gardener, these might be your best choice.

Welcome to the Kids Garden Club Blog!

Here's where you can interact with http://www.kidsgardenclub.org/ and, we hope, send your photos, activity ideas and lesson plans to be added to the website!

You can subscribe to the website to get a new gardening article once a week, on Mondays. On this blog, we'll post shorter articles, Q&As, post pictures, share gardening tips and cute quotes from the kids we garden with, and generally "talk gardening" whenever we want.

We love submissions by children and youth, but ask that you give us only your first name and last initial, along with your city and state. No last names will be used.

http://www.kidsgardenclub.org/ is also on Facebook, so please join us there for some more content and good reader suggestions from our fellow gardeners who love kids.

The Kids Garden Club, its website, blog and Facebook page, are all part of the After School Treats, Inc., family of websites. We sell ads and sponsorships on these websites to raise money for creative, after-school enrichment for disadvantaged children. As a nonprofit, tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) corporation, we are very grateful for any donations, and you will receive a child-written thank-you note -- the best kind!
